Navigating Redundancy

If you are leaving your position due to redundancy you can be left wondering – what do I do now? Initially, when you are first aware of this situation impacting you it can be pretty shocking and this might quickly be followed by fear, anxiety and loss of confidence.

Redundancy can, however, be a time of opportunity, a time to make a positive change, to take stock, and to pursue something new. Here are some steps you can take to help you move forward during this time:

    • Stay Positive. Easy to say, right? Yes, facing redundancy can be emotionally challenging so make sure you allow yourself time to process the news and acknowledge your feelings. But if you can also try to maintain a positive mindset and focus on the opportunities that lie ahead you will come through this change more smoothly.
    • Understand Your Rights and Benefits: Familiarise yourself with your rights and entitlements. Ask your employer if they provide professional Outplacement Support to help you with this transition.
    • Get a Clear Picture on Your Financial Situation: If you don’t already have a detailed budget now is the time to draw one up.
    • Consider Short-Term Work Opportunities: If you are wanting to or needing to take some time to explore your options perhaps doing some short-term contracting will suit you. This can help ease the pressure of feeling like you have to jump straight into something else if that ideal role isn’t on the horizon just yet.
    • Develop a Vision for Your Ideal Role: Start thinking about what will really suit you now, what did you love and despise about your last role? This might help you to focus on what your ideal next role might look like so you can target this in your job search.
    • Evaluate Your Recent Experience: Does the industry you’ve been in have a bright future. If not perhaps you can transfer your skills to one that does. Have you been happy in your previous role? If not then now is the time to consider a change. This is where meeting with a career coach can help.
    • Update Your CV: Polish your resume to highlight your achievements and transferrable skills. It’s worth getting assistance with this from a professional and this process will help you feel more confident.
    • Find Opportunities to Up-Skill: Maybe you’ll have some time to strengthen gaps in your skill set or help you transition to a new field or role. There are many online and short courses available in most sectors.
    • Stay Connected: You might find it hard to stay positive, and if you are isolated then that doesn’t help. Use the time to be in touch with people and there may be also some in your network you can chat to about career opportunities which might help.
