Unemployment peaked at 5.3% in September 2025 (160,000 people), the highest since 2016, but economists project it easing to 4.7% (140,000 people), with workforce growth of around 20,000 being outpaced by new roles.
MBIE predicts some employment growth over the coming years, the first increases since 2022. Highly skilled sectors such as professional services, IT, management, technical specialists, healthcare, and finance are expected to see steady growth.
Over 50% of employers are investing in upskilling for AI-augmented talent like data analysis, prompt engineering, and stakeholder communications, while some entry-level roles are being trimmed due to AI adoption.
Economic and Jobs Outlook
Employment growth in 2026 is expected to be modest at 0.3%, with major cities seeing the most opportunities. South Island regions like Canterbury and Otago/Southland are leading with rising wages and listings in tourism and construction (+10-15%), offering less competition than Auckland and Wellington.
Highly skilled sectors such as professional services, IT, management, technical specialists, healthcare, and finance are poised to see growth.
